Hi, my names Rob Goslin and I hail from Melbourne Australia. Some time ago Ron asked me if I would be interested in writing an article for this site, as I scratchbuild in N scale and mostly with Styrene, which is a bit under represented in most scratcbuilding. I have an article from the May '94 Model Railroader by Ben King, an most amazing scratchbuilder, and as I've always liked this building it seemed a good choice. If anyone wants a full blown "scratchbuild" I would suggest you get a copy of his article as he built it board by board and used no commercial parts at all. I'm not quite that game, so I'll be using commercial styrene sheet and windows. Regards Rob.Parts I'm using are Evergreen Styrene Clapboard for the walls, Grandt-line and Tichy Windows, Slaters stone sheet for the foundation, and small amounts of other Evergreen styrene sheet for doors, platforms etc. Heres a plan from the original article I have
all the walls were cut to shape, and all windows and doors cutout. I had missed cutting out the upper door in the first panel in this photo, but luckily realised before putting the walls together. I'm always keen to jump when I start a new scratchbuild, but it pays to slow down a bit, to avoid mistakes. While the pieces are flat, is also the time to add any detail, such as loose boards, (just run your blade along the bottom of some boards to lift their edges slightly), board joints and corner trim.
here's the walls assembled so they are actually starting to look like something.
The styrene I'm using is 1mm thick, so once the walls are together they tend to bow in slightly so I put a "floor" in th middle of the structure. |
