The WMRC was formed, as a result of not having an existing model railroad club in Windsor and Essex County, for the past twenty years. Furthermore, there is a growing number of new model railroaders who have shown an interest and emphasized the need for the formation of such a club. Finally, there are numerous model railroaders who simply do not have the available space within their own homes to build layouts. As a result, the formation of the WMRC serves as an outlet to these individuals, so that they may have a place where they may be able to bring their trains to run.

The UMG is an informal group of model railroaders from the Canadian Maritimes. The idea for this group came from the Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders' (MFMR) e-mail list in 2003. Dara (aka Father), suggested that modelers in the Maritimes that are not associated with a club can feel a bit disconnected. He thought that a “non-aligned” modular group would encourage these folks to become more active in the Federation.
